Damp the panel or absorb the echo: two different jobs

Damping mats, usually butyl rubber with a foil face, turn the vibration of thin metal into heat so doors, floors and trunk panels stop ringing. Thickness is quoted in mils, where 50 mil is about 1.3 mm, and coverage in square feet per box; covering a portion of each panel is often enough. Acoustic foam is different: it absorbs echo inside a room or enclosure, but it does not stop sound passing through walls.

Thermal wraps, surface prep and heat limits

Pipe insulation is thermal, not acoustic. Foam tubes are sized by pipe outer diameter and wall thickness, while self-adhesive foam tape wraps around bends. Peel-and-stick mats need clean, dry, degreased metal at room temperature and firm pressure from a roller. Check the heat rating before using anything near the exhaust or engine bay, and look for a flame rating where building rules apply.

Questions about Sound Deadening Mats and Acoustic Insulation

How much of a door needs sound-deadening mat?
Damping the large flat areas of the door skin is what counts. Covering roughly a quarter to a half of each panel often does most of the work, and edges or braced areas add little.
Will acoustic foam block my neighbor's noise?
Not much. Foam absorbs echo inside your room, but stopping sound that travels through a wall takes mass and sealed gaps. Foam panels improve how a room sounds rather than how much noise gets in.
Can pipe insulation reduce noise?
It mainly reduces heat loss and condensation. It can soften rattling where a pipe touches a surface, but it is not a soundproofing material, so choose a damping or mass-loaded product for noise.
