Bolt pattern, thread pitch and seat type

Every wheel part traces back to the hub. A bolt pattern such as 5x114.3 means five studs on a 114.3 mm circle. Stud threads are given by diameter and pitch, for example M12x1.5, and a nut with the wrong pitch can start but will damage the stud. The nut seat must also match the wheel: conical, ball or flat. A mismatch holds the wheel poorly and can work loose.

Chains, locks and installer kits: choose by tire size and hub

Tire chains are chosen from the size code on the sidewall, for example 225/65R17, and need enough clearance behind the tire; browse wheel assemblies and tire chains for sizing charts. Wheel locks must match the lug thread and seat, which is covered under valve stem caps and wheel locks. Press-in stud installer kits list thread size and length for specific models, so confirm yours first.

Questions about Wheel, Rim and Tire Accessories

How do I read a bolt pattern like 5x114.3?
The first number is the stud count and the second is the diameter, in millimeters, of the circle through their centers. Both must match your hub. Wheels with the same stud count but a different circle will not seat properly.
Do I need hub-centric rings?
They fill the gap when a wheel's center bore is larger than the hub. They center the wheel on the hub while the nuts are tightened, which makes vibration less likely. Match the ring's inner and outer diameters to the hub and the wheel.
Can I mix different lug nut seat types?
No. Conical, ball and flat seats grip the wheel differently, and the wrong one leaves little contact area, so nuts can loosen. Use the seat type the wheel was made for.
