Chain size comes from the tire code and your wheel-well clearance

Read the size on the tire sidewall, for example 235/65R17, then find it on the chain maker's chart. Listings are grouped by vehicle type: passenger, pickup and SUV, or larger SUV. Many modern cars have little space between the tire and the suspension or body, so check the manual for whether chains are allowed and which axle they fit. Low-profile chains exist for tight clearance.

Fitting, speed and keeping chains tight

Lay the chains out flat and fit them before you need them, ideally on dry ground. After a short drive, stop and retighten, or use chain tighteners to take up the slack. Keep to the maker's speed limit, often about 30 mph or 50 km/h, and remove chains on bare pavement. Rinse and dry them before putting them away so they do not rust, and practice fitting them once at home.

Questions about Tire Chains, Tighteners and Wheel Accessories

Which axle should tire chains go on?
Fit chains on the drive wheels: the front on front-wheel-drive cars and the rear on rear-wheel-drive ones. For all-wheel-drive vehicles, follow the owner's manual, which may say front, rear or both.
How tight should snow chains be?
Tight enough that they do not slap the fender or move around on the tire. Retighten after the first few hundred yards, and use rubber tighteners if the set includes them.
What if my tire size is not listed on the chart?
Do not guess. A chain that is too large can slip and one too small may not fit at all, which can damage the tire or car. Check the chain maker's chart or choose another set that lists your size.
