Mesh, spline and roller: three parts that must agree
Re-screening a window needs three matching parts. The mesh is described by its material and weave, for example 18x16 fiberglass, meaning 18 strands per inch one way and 16 the other, which keeps insects out while letting air through. The spline is the cord that locks the mesh into the frame groove, and its diameter must suit the groove: 0.14 inch is common. Measure the old spline before buying a new roll.
The roller presses spline into the groove, usually with two wheels, one to seat the mesh and one to push in the spline. Cut the mesh larger than the frame, work from one corner, and keep the tension even so the screen does not bow. Mesh sold on a wide roll, such as 96 inches across, suits patio doors and large windows, so one roll covers several repairs.
Screen door sizing and the pressure switches mixed in
Screen door sets are sized by the opening they cover, written in feet, such as 12 by 10 or 14 by 9. Measure the full width and height of the doorway, and choose a set at or slightly above those figures. Read what is included, since a bare panel differs from a set with a frame or fixings, and leave room for any trim or awning arm that projects into the opening.
Pressure switches also appear here. They are listed with a cut-in and a cut-out pressure, such as 85 psi on and 105 psi off, and the pair must sit inside the pressure range of the air compressor or pump they control. A version with a relay switches the motor current for you, so confirm the voltage and the amp rating.
Questions about Screens, Awnings and Screen Repair Parts
- What does 18x16 mesh mean?
- It counts the strands per inch running in each direction: 18 one way and 16 the other. A tighter weave stops smaller insects but passes a little less air and light. 18x16 is the usual fiberglass insect screen for windows and doors.
- How do I choose spline for my frame?
- Pull a short piece of the old spline out and measure its diameter, or push a trial length into the groove. Spline that is too thin lets the mesh pull out; spline that is too thick will not seat. Round and flat profiles are not interchangeable, so match the shape too.
- Fiberglass or aluminum screen mesh?
- Fiberglass is flexible, does not dent or crease and suits most windows. Aluminum mesh is stiffer and more durable but creases if bent, and it can corrode near salt air. Choose by the exposure and by how much handling the screen will get.
