Three things a replacement adapter must match

A replacement adapter must match the device on three points. Output voltage has to match the original, within a small tolerance. Current, in amps, can be equal or higher, because the device draws only what it needs. The plug tip must fit, with the right outer and inner diameter, such as 4.8 by 1.7 mm, and the same polarity. Watts are volts times amps, so a 19.5 V adapter at 3.33 A gives about 65 W. Some laptops also check a data pin or chip in the charger and will slow or refuse charging with an unrecognized one.

Plug adapters, surge strips and USB chargers are not the same

Not every product here is a power supply. A plug-shape adapter, such as Schuko to NEMA 5-15, only changes the pins, and it does not convert voltage, so check that the device accepts the local supply before traveling. A surge-protected strip lists a joule rating, which is how much surge energy it can absorb before wearing out, and a total amp or watt limit that the connected devices must stay under. USB charger ports quote watts per port and standards such as Power Delivery; the combined output is usually shared.

Questions about AC Adapters, Laptop Chargers and Power Bricks

Can I use a higher-wattage adapter than the original?
Yes, if the voltage and plug match exactly. The device only draws the current it needs, so an adapter with a higher amp or watt rating is safe, while one rated lower can overheat or fail to charge. Never raise the voltage.
Why does my laptop say the charger is not recognized?
Many laptops read an identification signal from the charger and limit charging, or refuse it, if the signal is missing. Use an adapter that lists your exact laptop model or part number, and keep the original tip type with its center pin.
What does the joule rating on a surge protector mean?
Joules measure how much surge energy the protector can absorb over its life; a higher number means more protection and longer service. Also check the clamping voltage, where lower is better, and replace the strip after a major surge or if its protection light goes out.
