Which connector pair does your equipment use?

Most desktop power supplies, monitors and switches take a C13 plug on the cord, which fits a C14 inlet on the device. A C14 to C13 extension therefore has a male C14 plug at one end and a female C13 socket at the other, so it slots between an existing cord and the device, or between a UPS or PDU outlet and the equipment. Servers and large UPS units often use the bigger C19 and C20 pair, rated for more current, and the two sizes do not fit each other. Wall-plug versions such as NEMA 5-15P to 5-15R simply lengthen a standard North American cord.

Gauge and load: how much can one cord carry?

Gauge is printed as AWG, and a lower number means a thicker conductor. As a rough guide, 18 AWG suits about 10 A, 16 AWG about 13 A, 14 AWG about 15 A and 12 AWG about 20 A, which is why high-draw servers and UPS equipment call for 12 or 14 AWG cords. Breakout cords, such as one wall plug feeding three or four C13 sockets, are limited by that plug: add up what is connected and keep the total below its rating. Some listings here are internal ATX extension cables, so read the connector line first.

Questions about PC and Server Power Extension Cords

Can I put a C14 to C13 extension between my PC and its power cord?
Yes. The female C13 end plugs into the C14 inlet on the power supply, and the male C14 end goes into the C13 end of your existing cord or into a UPS or PDU outlet. The weakest part, whether cord or outlet, sets the safe load.
What does 14 AWG mean on an extension cord?
It is the thickness of each copper conductor. A lower AWG number is thicker and carries more current with less heat, so a 12 or 14 AWG cord suits a power-hungry workstation or server better than a thin 18 AWG cord.
Is a C19 to C20 cord interchangeable with C13 to C14?
No. C19 and C20 are larger connectors for higher current, found on servers, switches and big UPS units. They do not physically fit the smaller C13 and C14 pair, so choose the cord by the connectors on both devices.
