USB-C or USB-A at the other end, and what MFi means

The Lightning end is the same on every cable, but the other end decides charging speed. A USB-C to Lightning cable on a Power Delivery charger fast-charges supported iPhones, while a USB-A to Lightning cable charges more slowly and suits older chargers and computers. MFi, short for Made for iPhone, means the cable includes Apple's authentication chip. Cables without it may charge slowly, trigger an unsupported-accessory warning, or stop working after a system update. Some listings state MFi in the title.

Length, strain and the devices that still use Lightning

Lightning data runs at USB 2.0 speed (480 Mbit/s) on any cable, so a cable that promises faster syncing gains nothing. Longer cables lose a little more power to resistance, so charging may be slightly slower at 6 ft or 10 ft than at 3 ft. Braided jackets and reinforced necks cope better with bending, since the connector neck is the usual failure point. Check your device first: iPhone 15 and later use USB-C, while iPhone 14 and earlier, older iPads and some accessories still need Lightning.

Questions about Lightning Charge and Sync Cables

Does a Lightning cable have to be MFi certified?
Certification is not needed for the plug to fit, but certified cables carry Apple's authentication chip and are much less likely to charge poorly or show an unsupported-accessory message. Look for MFi in the title.
Can a Lightning cable fast-charge an iPhone?
Yes, if it has a USB-C end, the charger supports USB Power Delivery and the iPhone is a model that supports fast charging, which means iPhone 8 and later. A USB-A to Lightning cable cannot reach those speeds.
Will a Lightning cable work with my new iPhone?
Not with an iPhone 15 or later, which have USB-C ports. Lightning cables fit iPhone 14 and earlier, plus older iPads, AirPods cases and accessories that have a Lightning port.
