Which slot does your machine actually have

Look at the port before the drive. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD uses the same connectors as a laptop hard drive and tops out near 550 MB/s. M.2 drives fit a small socket on the motherboard, but an M.2 socket can be SATA, NVMe or both, and a drive of the wrong kind will not work. NVMe drives use PCIe lanes: around 3,500 MB/s on PCIe 3.0 x4, up to about 7,400 MB/s on 4.0 and more on 5.0.

Length matters as well. The M.2 code gives width and length in millimetres, so 2280 is 22 by 80 mm, the usual desktop and laptop size, while 2230 and 2242 suit handhelds, tablets and compact laptops. A PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 drive still works in an older slot but at the slot's speed. Older mSATA drives, a different small card, belong to ageing ultrabooks and cannot go in an M.2 socket.

Sustained speed, endurance and heat: reading the spec sheet

Headline speeds are for short bursts. Many drives write fast into a cache and slow down once it fills, which shows when you copy tens of gigabytes. Endurance is rated as TBW, the total terabytes the drive is rated to absorb, and larger drives carry higher figures. Fast PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 drives get hot and can throttle without a heatsink; many motherboards supply one, laptops depend on airflow, and consoles and handhelds have their own rules. Intended use labels such as consumer, gaming and enterprise hint at the rating.

Questions about Internal SSDs: M.2 NVMe and 2.5-Inch SATA Drives

Can I use an NVMe SSD in a SATA-only M.2 slot?
Not if the slot is SATA-only. Some M.2 sockets accept NVMe only, some SATA only, and some both, and the notch on the drive can differ. Check your motherboard or laptop manual before choosing.
Do I need a heatsink for an M.2 SSD?
Many boards include one. Fast PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 drives can throttle under long writes without cooling. In a laptop, check clearance before adding a tall heatsink; thin chassis often have room only for the bare drive.
What does TBW mean?
Terabytes written: the total amount of data the maker rates the drive to absorb over its life. Larger drives carry higher TBW. Everyday users rarely reach it, but heavy video editing or database work can.
