Direction and signal type: the adapter trap

A video cable is not just a wire. Between digital formats, such as HDMI to DVI, a simple passive cable works, but DVI carries no sound, so audio needs a separate route. VGA is analog, so converting VGA to HDMI needs electronics inside the adapter, and these adapters work in one direction only: a VGA-to-HDMI cable cannot turn an HDMI source into VGA.

Connector variants cause most mistakes. DVI-I with 29 pins includes analog pins, DVI-D does not, and a DisplayPort-to-DVI lead must match the DVI type on the monitor. USB-C to HDMI works only when the USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt; a charge-only port shows nothing. Active cables contain a chip to convert or boost the signal and are listed for specific resolutions.

Length, version and gender on video cables

Quoted length and resolution belong together. A 50 ft passive run suits lower resolutions, whereas the active 5 m USB-C to HDMI cable in this range is rated for 4K 60 Hz. A male-to-male cable joins two sockets; if your device has a plug instead, you need a female end or a gender changer. Multi-packs, such as five short DisplayPort-to-VGA adapters, suit offices that outfit many desks identically.

Questions about HDMI, VGA and Display Cables: Adapters Explained

Why is there no sound through my VGA to HDMI adapter?
VGA carries picture only, so the adapter cannot create audio from it. Some adapters have a 3.5 mm audio input: run a lead from the source's headphone or line output into it, and the adapter adds the sound to the HDMI signal. Without that input, run sound through a different cable.
Will a USB-C to HDMI cable work on any USB-C port?
No. The port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt or USB4 video output. Many laptop ports and some phones do, but charge-only or data-only ports do not. Check the device specification for a display symbol or a video-output mention.
Does an HDMI to DVI cable carry audio?
Normally no. DVI has no audio channel, so you get picture only and need a separate cable from the source to speakers or a monitor with its own audio input. Pair it with a 3.5 mm lead for sound.
