Complete wheel, base or loose part: read the product type

Product type shows what is in the box. A complete wheel includes the rim and base and often pedals. A base is only the motor and electronics, and you add a rim. Shifters, handbrakes and pedals are add-ons that connect by USB or to the base. Accessory kits, such as a pedal upgrade kit, fit only the pedal family they are named for. A trucking bundle may pair a large 400 mm rim with extra buttons for cab controls.

Match the ecosystem before adding parts. Bases, rims, pedals and shifters from one maker are designed to connect, while another maker's part may not fit the plug or the software. Check the platform line (PC, Xbox, PlayStation) for each part separately, since a handbrake or shifter may support different systems than the base it attaches to. Mixing makers is where most compatibility trouble starts.

Rotation, rim size and sensor resolution

Wheel rotation is quoted in degrees, for example 900 degrees lock to lock, and most games let you reduce it in software to suit the car. Rim diameter changes both feel and rig fit: a 400 mm truck rim is far bigger than a common 300 mm rim. Pedals use potentiometers or load cells, and a load cell measures pressure rather than travel, which makes braking more repeatable. Sensor resolution, such as a 16-bit handbrake sensor, gives finer steps over the lever's travel.

Questions about Racing Wheels, Pedals and Shifters Explained

Do I need a base as well as a wheel?
Check the title. Some wheels are complete units with the motor inside, while others are rims that attach to a separate base. A rim alone does nothing without a compatible base, and many bases are sold without a rim.
What is a load cell pedal?
A load cell pedal measures how hard you press rather than how far the pedal moves, which feels closer to a real brake and makes braking easier to repeat. Potentiometer pedals measure travel and are simpler. Check which type the listing names.
What does an N·m figure on a wheel tell me?
It is the peak torque, or turning force, the base can apply to the rim, in newton-meters. Higher numbers mean stronger, more detailed feedback and a need for a sturdier mount. Bundle titles often quote it, such as 5.5 N·m or 12 Nm.
