PS4 or PS5: the generation sets the rules

The area is laid out by generation, each with consoles, games and accessories. For the newer console, see PS5 Consoles & Bundles and Games for PS5; the PS4 branches mirror them. A PS5 plays most PS4 games, but a PS4 cannot run PS5 games, so the game's generation matters more than the box art. Pick the console first, because everything else follows from it.

Within PS5, check the disc drive. Digital Edition consoles have no disc slot, so they play only downloaded games, while disc models take physical copies, including PS4 discs. Storage sizes, 825 GB or 1 TB for the models listed, hold fewer large games than expected, because system files take a share. Bundles add a game or an extra controller, so compare contents.

Controllers, headsets and VR: matching the accessory to the console

DualSense is the PS5 controller and adds haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The PS4's DualShock 4 works with PS4 games on either console but not with PS5 games. Headsets listed as wired or wireless should name the console they support. A VR headset listing is a separate platform with its own requirements. Colors such as Chroma Pearl or Galactic Purple are cosmetic variants of the same pad.

Questions about PlayStation Games and Hardware by Generation

Can a PS5 play PS4 games?

Most PS4 games run on a PS5, either from disc on models with a disc drive or from a download. Some titles gain PS5 improvements. A PS4 cannot play PS5-only games, so match the game's platform to your console.

What is the difference between a Digital Edition PS5 and a disc model?

The Digital Edition has no disc drive and plays only downloaded games, while the disc model also reads physical discs. Some digital models can add an external disc drive, so check the specific console version.

Does the old PS4 controller work on a PS5?

Yes, but only for PS4 games on a PS5. PS5 games require the DualSense, and features such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are exclusive to it. The DualShock 4 still suits local multiplayer in PS4 titles.
