Pack size against the length you need to light

Lights in this group are markers, not floodlights: most are rated in single or low double-digit lumens, so they define an edge rather than light a whole yard. That makes spacing the main sizing question. Place path lights close enough that their pools of light touch, and put step lights on each tread or every second riser so no step is left in shadow. Divide the length by your spacing to find the pack you need, and round up to allow for corners.

Stakes, deck caps and step lights by surface

Match the fixture to what it mounts on. Stake lights push into soil and suit beds and lawn edges; deck and post lights screw or clip to rails and posts; step lights sit flush in a riser or on a wall. Black, stainless steel, satin nickel and chrome finishes are all common. Solar versions need sky above the panel, while wired sets add a transformer and cable. For wet or salty spots, look for a stated weather rating such as IP67 and a stainless or coated housing.

Questions about Path, Deck and Step Lights

How far apart should path lights be?
Close enough that each light's glow meets the next, so there are no dark gaps. Dim solar markers need tighter spacing than brighter wired heads. Test with the lights set out before pushing stakes in, then adjust for bends and steps.
Do solar deck and step lights need direct sun?
The panel needs daylight, ideally some direct sun, to charge fully. A step light tucked under a deck overhang or beside a wall may get too little. Choose a model with a separate panel on a cable, or a wired version, for shaded spots.
Are stainless steel path lights better than plastic ones?
Stainless steel resists corrosion and knocks, and higher grades keep their look in wet or salty air. Plastic and resin never rust and weigh less, but strong sun can fade or crack poor-quality plastic over several seasons. In a sheltered border, either type works well.
