Protect the system, protect files, or move to a new PC

Pick the job before the product. A disk image copies the whole system, so you can restore Windows or macOS, apps and settings after a failure. File backup copies chosen folders on a schedule, which is lighter and easier to browse. A migration tool moves programs, files and settings from an old computer to a new one. Other titles here handle remote control, file conversion and disk management, and they are not backups at all.

Where the backup goes matters as much as the software. An external drive or network storage keeps copies local and fast, while a second location or cloud storage protects against fire or theft. Cloud space is often a separate subscription even when the software is a one-time license. The old rule of thumb still holds: three copies, on two kinds of media, with one kept off-site.

How licenses count devices, uses and years

Coverage is counted in different ways. Backup titles are usually licensed per computer or device, from one up to several, migration tools are sold by the number of uses, as the one-use and two-use titles show, and utilities by device. Terms are either perpetual or fixed at one to two years. A perpetual license keeps the version working, but newer releases, and sometimes cloud features, can need a fresh purchase. Check the platform line too: some editions cover Windows only, others Windows and Mac, and a few are Mac only.

An untested backup is a hope, not a plan. Before relying on a backup tool, test a restore: check that you can start the computer from the rescue media, that the backup drive is big enough to hold several generations of images rather than just one, and that you know where any recovery key or password is kept.

Questions about Backup Software and PC Utilities

Is backup software the same as cloud storage?
No. Backup software makes and manages copies, and cloud storage is one place to keep them. Some products bundle cloud space, others back up only to drives you supply. Check whether a cloud allowance is included, or you may need a separate plan.
Can I restore a disk image to a new computer?
Sometimes. Restoring to different hardware usually needs a feature that handles the changes, and not every edition has it. For moving to a new computer, a migration tool is a more direct route. Check the feature list for restore options before you buy.
Does a perpetual backup license keep getting updates?
A perpetual license lets you keep using the version you bought, but it does not promise future releases or ongoing cloud services. Fixes may arrive during a support period, and major new versions are often sold separately. Read the product description.
