Compact standby UPS

The APC BK500BLK is a 500 VA standby battery backup with six NEMA 5-15R outlets. Three outlets provide battery-backed power and surge protection, while the remaining three deliver surge protection only. It accepts 98 to 140 V input and supplies 120 V output through a NEMA 5-15P plug. A sealed lead-acid battery recharges in eight hours and is user-replaceable with RBC2 or RBC2J packs.

Desktop and networking protection

This unit suits home-office PCs, routers, modems and phone-line equipment needing brief ride-through during outages. Data-line protection covers analog phone, fax, modem or DSL connections via an RJ-11 port. USB and DB-9 RS-232 interfaces enable monitoring and graceful shutdown software. Equipment requiring continuous pure sine-wave output or longer runtime at full load should look at other topologies.

300 watt output limit

The UPS delivers a maximum of 300 watts on its battery-backed outlets. Add the power draw of every device you plan to connect to those three outlets; if the total exceeds 300 W the unit will overload and alarm. The half-load runtime is 15 minutes and full-load runtime is 3 minutes, so plan loads accordingly.

Questions about this item

How much desk or floor space does the 4-inch-wide by 11-inch-deep unit need?

The UPS measures 4 inches wide by 11 inches deep by 7 inches high, so allow at least that footprint plus a few inches of clearance for the 6-foot cord and ventilation.

Which outlets should I plug my computer and monitor into, and what does the USB cable do?

Connect critical devices to the three NEMA 5-15R outlets marked Battery Backup; use the other three for surge-only loads. The USB link lets the PC monitor battery status and trigger a graceful shutdown.

When and how do I swap the sealed lead-acid battery?

Replace the user-replaceable RBC2 or RBC2J cartridge when runtime drops noticeably — typically after 3 to 5 years. Power off, unplug, open the battery door, disconnect the old pack, insert the new one, and recharge for eight hours.
