Reading VA and watts so the load fits

A UPS has two ratings, volt-amps and watts, and the watt figure is the hard limit. A 1500 VA unit with a 900 W rating can carry 900 W of equipment at most, and it should not live at that edge. Add up the real draw of the computer, monitor, router and anything else, then leave generous headroom, because the battery also drains faster at heavy loads.

Runtime is the other half. Spec sheets quote it at half load or full load, and a UPS feeding a small router may last far longer than one feeding a gaming PC. The goal for most desks is a few minutes, enough to save work and shut down cleanly. For servers and storage that must stay on, look at larger units or ones that accept extra battery packs.

Sine wave, topology and tower or rack

Cheaper units output a stepped approximation of a sine wave while on battery, which most gear tolerates. Some computer power supplies with active power factor correction can misbehave on it, so models that state Sine Wave in the title are the safer match for modern PCs and servers. Line-interactive designs correct voltage without using the battery, while online double-conversion units give the cleanest output at higher cost.

Physical format follows use. Tower units sit under a desk and offer six to twelve outlets, while 1U and 2U rack models bolt into equipment racks and weigh much more. Check the output voltage, outlet types and weight against your room. Battery chemistry matters: sealed lead-acid is common and serviceable, lithium-ion lasts longer and weighs less. Plan to replace lead-acid batteries every few years even if nothing seems wrong.

Questions about UPS Battery Backups for Computers and Racks

How long will a UPS run my computer?
It depends on the load and the battery. Lighter loads run longer, and heavy ones can drain it in minutes. Compare the runtime chart in the datasheet with your actual wattage rather than the VA number.
Do I need a pure sine wave UPS?
It is the safer choice for computers with active power factor correction supplies and for sensitive equipment. Simple devices tolerate stepped waveforms, so check your power supply's manual if unsure.
Can I plug a laser printer into a UPS?
Not recommended. Laser printers and heaters draw large surges that can overload a UPS and shorten its battery life. Keep them on a wall outlet and protect only the computer and network gear.
