USB 3.0 Slimline SATA adapter cable
This BUCIER U3-381-XY adapter connects a laptop internal SATA optical drive to a USB 3.0 port using a 13-pin Slimline SATA connector. It draws power from the USB connection, so no external supply is needed. The cable works without drivers on Windows XP, Windows 7, macOS and newer systems. It also supports booting from the external drive.
Replaces internal laptop optical bay
The adapter lets you use a removed laptop DVD drive or a second hard-drive caddy as an external USB device. It is useful when a laptop lacks an internal bay or when the built-in drive has failed. The jump is worth it if you still read or write optical media on a modern machine without a built-in drive. It does not fit desktop optical drives.
Handles laptop DVD drives and 2.5-inch caddies
The 5 Gbps USB 3.0 link provides enough bandwidth for standard DVD read and write speeds. A 2.5-inch SATA hard drive or SSD in a caddy will run at its usual SATA rate, limited only by the drive itself. The adapter cannot power 3.5-inch desktop drives or drives that need more current than the USB port supplies.

Questions about this item
Does the 13-pin Slimline SATA connector fit a laptop optical drive?
Yes, the 7+6 13-pin Slimline SATA connector is designed for laptop CD/DVD ROM drives and 2nd hard drive caddies; it does not fit desktop optical drives.
How do I install the adapter, and what step is often missed?
Connect the USB 3.0 plug to the host, attach the 13-pin end to the drive, and ensure the drive is fully seated — the cable draws power from the USB port so no external supply is needed.
Will the copper conductor degrade and require replacement?
The copper conductor is rated for the USB 3.0 5 Gbps link; under normal use it does not wear out, so no periodic replacement is expected.
