DELL OptiPlex 790 Mini Tower

The DELL OptiPlex 790 Mini Tower is a desktop computer built for student and home office use. It runs on an Intel Core i5-2400 quad-core processor with a base clock of 3.10GHz and a turbo range up to 3.30GHz. The system includes 8GB of DDR3 memory across four DIMM slots and a 500GB 3.5-inch SATA hard drive. Windows 10 Pro 64-bit is pre-installed with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Thermals noise and power

The Mini Tower chassis provides standard airflow for the Intel Q67 chipset platform and the 64-bit quad-core CPU. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 2000 handles display output without a discrete graphics card, keeping power draw modest for typical office tasks. A 16X DVD±RW drive and a USB WiFi adapter are included, while Gigabit Ethernet provides wired connectivity. The bundled USB keyboard and mouse complete the package for immediate deployment.

Upgrade path and limits

Memory can be expanded to a maximum of 16GB DDR3 using the four 240-pin slots, though all slots are currently populated with 2GB modules. The 3.5-inch SATA drive bay allows storage upgrades to larger hard drives or SATA SSDs. Buyers who need more storage bays, dedicated graphics performance, or modern memory standards should consider a different platform. The Intel 2nd generation architecture limits compatibility with newer instruction sets and faster I/O interfaces.

Questions about this item

How do I add more DDR3 memory when all four 240-pin DIMM slots are already occupied by the 2 GB modules?

You must remove at least one existing 2 GB stick before inserting a larger DDR3 module; the board has four slots total and supports up to 16 GB.

Which component will I likely need to replace first after several years of daily use?

The 3.5" 500 GB SATA hard drive has moving parts and typically fails before the solid-state components.

What thermal limit appears first when the Intel Core i5-2400 runs at 3.10 GHz under a sustained heavy workload?

The stock mini-tower cooler reaches its capacity, causing the CPU to throttle below its maximum turbo frequency.
