Purpose-built 2U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server designed for organisations that need dense compute and storage in a standard cabinet. It ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2609v3 six-core processor at 1.9 GHz and 8 GB of DDR4 memory. The chassis supports up to two processors and 24 DIMM slots for future expansion. Eight 3.5-inch hot-plug drive bays accept SAS or SATA drives and the PERC H330 controller manages RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60.

Thermals noise and power

Dual 750 W hot-swap redundant power supplies keep the system running if one unit fails or needs replacement. The 2U form factor uses front-to-back airflow tuned for rack environments, so fan speed ramps with inlet temperature and workload. Acoustic output is typical for a rackmount server and is not intended for quiet office spaces. Power draw scales with processor count, memory population and drive activity, staying within the 750 W supply rating under normal load.

Storage capacity limit

Maximum supported raw capacity is 64 TB across the eight drive bays when populated with large-capacity SAS or SATA drives. The installed configuration provides two 600 GB 15 K SAS drives, leaving six bays free for growth. Buyers who need more than 64 TB of internal storage must look at external arrays or a different chassis. The PERC H330 handles the supported RAID levels without a dedicated cache module.

Questions about this item

How do I install the second processor in the R730 and which step is often missed?

Open the 2U chassis, place the second E5-2609v3 into the empty CPU socket, add matching DDR4 DIMMs in the 12 slots for that processor, then update the iDRAC8 firmware so the new CPU is recognised.

What maintenance will the two 600 GB 15K SAS drives and the H330 controller need later?

Monitor SMART data via the H330 RAID BIOS; replace any drive that shows reallocated sectors, and rebuild the RAID 1 array. The 750 W redundant power supplies are hot-swap and can be swapped one at a time if a fan fails.

What limit appears first when the server runs at full load for hours?

The single 1.9 GHz six-core Xeon and the 8 GB DDR4 memory ceiling will saturate before the SAS drives or dual 750 W power supplies become a bottleneck.
