What this splitter box does

The DTech DT-5047 expands one DB9 RS232 connection into two ports so a single PC can monitor and control two serial devices such as scales, scanners or modems. It also works in reverse, letting two PCs capture data from one instrument, though only one device can transmit at a time. The unit is powered by an included DC 5 V 1 A adapter to keep signals stable.

How the power adapter changes use

The external DC 5 V 1 A supply removes the need to draw current from the host port, so long cable runs and multiple peripherals stay reliable without voltage drop. Because the box is self-powered it can duplicate outgoing data to both outputs simultaneously or switch incoming data between two PCs without signal degradation. No driver installation is required on Windows, Mac or Linux.

Installation notes and common issues

Connect the host PC or device to the input port with a straight-through cable and attach peripherals to the two output ports, then plug in the power adapter. The main pitfall is using a null-modem cable where a straight-through cable is needed, which reverses transmit and receive lines and stops communication. Ensure only one attached device transmits at a time in the dual-PC capture mode.

Questions about this item

Will the DC 5 V 1 A power adapter need replacement after long-term use?

The unit ships with a 5 V 1 A adapter; like any external supply it may eventually wear out and can be swapped for an equivalent 5 V 1 A unit.

What limits continuous operation when two serial devices share the single COM port?

Only one terminal device can transmit to the PC at a time, so simultaneous output from both connected devices creates the practical throughput ceiling.

How much heat or noise does the splitter produce when powered all day?

The plastic-and-metal enclosure has no fan; it runs silently and generates only modest warmth from the 5 V 1 A supply during continuous use.
