Slot plates need the right header

Slot-plate adapters bring a motherboard header out to a rear bracket. Headers are not interchangeable: a USB 2.0 header is a 9-pin block and a USB 3.0 header a 19-pin block, and they are keyed differently, so never force one into the other. Serial plates use a 10-pin header, so match pin 1 against the motherboard manual. Check bracket height as well, because low-profile cases need the short bracket. For OCuLink or PCIe adapters, confirm the lane count and the slot or port your board offers.

Gender changers, null modems and card-format adapters

Simple passive adapters each do one job. A gender changer joins two plugs or two sockets of the same type. A null modem adapter crosses the transmit and receive lines so two computers or serial devices can talk to each other over RS-232. A microSD to SD adapter only changes the card's physical size, so the reader must still support the card type and speed class. Network modules such as SFP+ adapters must suit the host port and the speed they advertise, for example 10GBASE-T, and some switches accept only listed modules.

Questions about Interface Adapters: Slot Plates, SD, Serial and More

Can I use a USB 3.0 slot plate on a board with only USB 2.0 headers?
No. A USB 3.0 plate needs the 19-pin header, which a board with only 9-pin USB 2.0 headers lacks. Check your motherboard manual for the headers it offers before choosing a plate, and note that bracket height must suit your case.
Does a microSD to SD adapter make the card faster?
No. It only changes the physical size. Speed depends on the card and the reader, so a card rated for fast video capture still needs a reader that supports its bus speed to deliver it.
What is OCuLink and what does an OCuLink adapter connect?
OCuLink is a cable standard that carries PCIe lanes outside a computer, used for external graphics docks and NVMe drives. Both ends must support it and match the lane count, usually four, and it is not designed for hot-plugging.
