48-port switch with 90W PoE

The Extreme Networks 5420F16MW32P4XE delivers 48 copper ports in a 1U chassis. Sixteen ports supply up to 90W each under 802.3bt while thirty-two ports provide 30W under 802.3at. Four unpopulated SFP+ slots handle 1 or 10Gb uplink modules. The unit ships new with a fixed 1200W internal supply.

PoE budget depends on mains voltage

With the single internal supply the available PoE budget is 860W at 100-120VAC or 960W at 200-240VAC. Adding the recommended secondary supply raises those limits to 1425W and 1862W respectively. Maximum system draw reaches 2152W so the upstream circuit must be sized accordingly. All ports are MACsec-capable.

Sixteen 2.5G ports set the density limit

Only the sixteen multi-rate ports negotiate 2.5Gbps; the remaining thirty-two copper ports top out at 1Gbps. Buyers needing 2.5G on every access port will need a different model. The four SFP+ uplinks and two stack ports use separate SFP+ and SFP-DD slots not counted in the 48-port total.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 90 W or 30 W PoE ports for my access points?

Use the sixteen 2.5 GbE ports when devices need up to 90 W; use the thirty-two 1 GbE ports for gear that only needs up to 30 W.

What does the 860 W PoE budget mean once the switch is rack-mounted?

At 100-120 VAC the single internal 1200 W PSU delivers 860 W for PoE; at 200-240 VAC it delivers 960 W. Adding the recommended second PSU raises those limits to 1425 W and 1862 W respectively.

Are the four SFP+ uplink ports limited to 1 GbE or can they run at 10 GbE?

Each SFP+ slot accepts 1 GbE or 10 GbE transceivers, so uplinks can operate at either speed depending on the module you install.
