HP EliteBook 840 G5 quad-core business laptop

The HP EliteBook 840 G5 is a 14.0 inch FHD business laptop powered by an Intel Core i7-8650U quad-core processor running at 1.9 GHz up to 4.2 GHz with Turbo Boost. It ships with 32 GB of DDR4 memory in a 16 GB x 2 configuration and a 512 GB PCIe M.2 SSD. Windows 10 Pro is pre-installed for immediate deployment.

Intel UHD Graphics 620 integrated graphics limits

Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 handles office applications, web browsing and video playback but cannot drive modern 3D titles or GPU-accelerated workloads at high settings. The 1920 x 1080 non-touch panel is driven entirely by the processor graphics subsystem. External displays connect through the USB Type-C ports with DisplayPort functionality, while the built-in Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 handle networking.

Silver aluminium unibody with USB 3.0 and Type-C

The silver aluminium unibody chassis houses a front-facing webcam and omits an optical drive to save weight. Connectivity includes a pair of USB 3.0 ports, USB Type-C ports with DisplayPort output, a headphone jack and Gigabit Ethernet. The 512 GB PCIe M.2 SSD and 32 GB DDR4 memory are installed internally. Buyers who need discrete graphics, a larger 15.6 inch screen or a smaller 13.3 inch form factor should consider other models in the EliteBook G5 series.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 16 GB x 2 DDR4 kit or a single 32 GB module?

The laptop ships with two 16 GB DDR4 sticks for 32 GB total, running in dual-channel mode for maximum bandwidth.

What does the 4.2 GHz turbo figure mean when I am editing video?

The i7-8650U can boost to 4.2 GHz on short bursts, so timeline scrubbing and quick encodes stay responsive before thermals pull clocks back.

What does the USB 3.0 Type-C port with DisplayPort actually support?

The USB 3.0 Type-C connector carries DisplayPort video, so one cable drives an external monitor at 1920 x 1080 while still providing 5 Gbps data bandwidth.
