  • Replaceable Ni-MH battery extends product life
  • Built-in flashlight and reading lamp add utility

Emergency power options

The KAITO KA500 runs from five sources: an AC adapter, three AA batteries, a built-in rechargeable Ni-MH pack, a hand crank dynamo, and a solar panel. The crank keeps the radio working even with no battery installed. An 180-degree adjustable solar panel tracks the sun for better charging.

Capacity and headroom

The replaceable Ni-MH pack powers the radio, a 5-LED reading lamp and a flashlight for extended periods. Hand cranking recharges the pack and can also top up a phone through the rear jack. The USB port charges the radio itself from a computer. Runtime ends when the pack is depleted and no external source is connected.

Weather alert reception

Seven pre-set NOAA channels deliver automatic weather alerts alongside AM, FM and shortwave bands. The rubberised water-resistant housing protects the tuner and lighting in wet conditions. This radio is not for users who need internet streaming, Bluetooth audio or two-way communication.

Questions about this item

Will the KA500 charge from the USB port on my older laptop?

Yes, the KA500 can charge its built-in Ni-MH battery from a computer USB port, so an older laptop with a standard USB socket will work.

How do I confirm the NOAA weather alert is active on the KA500?

Tune to one of the 7 pre-set NOAA channels; when an alert is broadcast the radio sounds a tone and switches to the weather audio automatically.

Does the green KA500 include the AC adapter or AA batteries shown in photos?

The radio comes with the unit itself, the replaceable Ni-MH pack already installed, and the 180-degree adjustable solar panel; the AC adapter and three AA batteries are sold separately.
