4TB rugged USB-C portable drive

The LaCie STFR4000800 provides four terabytes of bus-powered storage in an orange enclosure rated for drops, crushes and rain. Creative professionals and field workers who move large media libraries between locations can rely on its physical toughness and single-cable operation.

Upgrade from fragile bus-powered drives

Mechanical portables without environmental sealing risk data loss when knocked off a desk or caught in weather. The jump is worth it when shoots, site visits or commutes expose the drive to shock or moisture that would kill a standard plastic-cased unit.

USB 3.0 Type-C interface limits

The drive connects through a USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5 Gb/s) Type-C port and includes a USB-C to USB-A cable for legacy hosts. Peak throughput is bounded by the 5 Gb/s link, so sustained transfers will not exceed the mechanical disk’s own ceiling or the bus bandwidth, whichever is lower.

Questions about this item

Will the 1.02" x 3.39" x 5.32" enclosure fit in a standard laptop bag pocket?

At 1.02 inches thick and 0.88 lb, the orange rubber-bumpered case slides into most laptop sleeves and small messenger-bag pockets without bulging.

How do I connect the drive to a computer that only has USB-A ports?

Use the included USB-C to USB-A cable; plug the USB-C end into the drive and the USB-A end into the computer — no driver install is required on Windows 7+ or Mac OS X 10.5+.

Does the 4TB mechanical drive inside need any periodic maintenance or replacement?

No scheduled maintenance is required; keep the rubber bumper on for drop and rain protection, eject the volume before unplugging, and replace the unit only if the drive itself fails.
