What it is and who it is for

The LG GP65NB60 is a slim external DVD rewriter that connects over USB and fits in a laptop bag. It writes DVD±R at 8×, CD-R at 24× and reads both formats at the same speeds. The 768 KB buffer helps keep burns steady on older machines or low-power ultraportables. It is not for buyers who need Blu-ray playback or internal 5.25-inch bay installation.

Installation and common issues

The drive draws power from the USB port so no separate adapter is required; plug it in and the operating system usually recognises it immediately. A tray-load mechanism means discs sit flat and the 0.60-inch height clears most tight desk spaces. The main friction point is cable length on desktop towers where the front USB ports are far from the optical bay.

The spec that decides fit

Maximum write speeds are 8× for DVD±R and 24× for CD-R, with DVD±R DL at 6× and DVD-RAM at 5×. Access times are 160 ms for DVD-ROM and 140 ms for CD-ROM. If your workflow demands faster DVD writing or Blu-ray support, this model will not meet that requirement.

Questions about this item

How do I confirm the drive is performing at its rated 8X DVD and 24X CD write speeds after setup?

Use burning software that displays real-time write speed; a successful 8X DVD burn should complete in roughly 8 minutes and a 24X CD burn in about 3 minutes.

What comes in the box and which cables or accessories must be purchased separately?

The package includes the slim black drive with tray load mechanism; a USB cable for power and data is typically included, while additional media or mounting brackets are sold separately.

Which version of this model should I choose for M-DISC support and Mac compatibility?

The GP65NB60 is a single black model that already supports M-DISC recording and works with both Mac and Surface devices without needing a different variant.
