Purpose and Audience

The LUOM HY-5001 extracts audio from an HDMI source and sends it to optical SPDIF or RCA stereo outputs while passing the video through to a display. It suits owners of soundbars, AV receivers or powered speakers that lack HDMI inputs but need multichannel or stereo sound from a Blu-ray player, game console or streaming stick.

Upgrade Path

The unit replaces a direct HDMI connection when the display cannot forward audio to an external sound system or when the source device has no separate audio output. The jump is worth it if you need 5.1-channel surround via optical or 2.0-channel analogue without buying a new amplifier with HDMI switching.

Capacity and Headroom

Video passes through at up to 1080 resolution with 36-bit deep colour and 3D support, while audio handles LPCM 7.1, DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD formats. Three selectable modes — PASS, 2.0CH and 5.1CH — cover most legacy and current soundtracks. The extractor does not support ARC, so TV-internal apps cannot send audio back through the same cable.

Questions about this item

What size HDMI plug does the extractor accept and how long is the attached cable?

The unit has a standard HDMI female input and ships with a 5 in. integrated cable.

Which audio mode should I select for a soundbar that only handles stereo?

Set the switch to 2.0CH; PASS passes the source format unchanged and 5.1CH is for multichannel systems.

Will the optical or RCA outputs degrade over time and need replacement?

The extractor has no moving parts; only the external 5 V power adapter may eventually require replacement.
