A splitter mirrors; it does not extend

A splitter sends the same picture to every output. It does not give each screen its own content, so it suits a shared presentation, a sign or a TV in two rooms, and not a multi-monitor desktop. For separate desktops you need a graphics output for each screen, or on DisplayPort a multi-stream hub. Every output also shares one signal, so a lower-spec display can pull all screens down to its resolution. Count the outputs you need, note the input and output connectors, and check whether power comes from USB or a wall adapter.

Resolution, HDCP and distance limits

Match the splitter's maximum resolution and refresh rate to the source and displays. A unit rated for 4K at 30 Hz will not pass 4K at 60 Hz, and HDR or 8K need newer designs. Protected video relies on HDCP, and one older display in the chain can block the picture. Long runs weaken a signal on plain copper, so for greater distances look at splitters that send video over network cable to a receiver at each screen, or at a distribution amplifier that regenerates the signal.

Questions about HDMI and Video Splitters for Multiple Screens

Why did my screens drop to a lower resolution?
The splitter reads each display's capabilities and often settles on the lowest common setting. Remove or replace the weakest display, or choose a splitter with EDID management that lets you lock the output resolution.
Do I need a powered HDMI splitter?
Usually yes for more than two outputs, 4K or long cable runs, because the splitter regenerates the signal and needs power for that. Some two-port models draw power from the cable; others include a wall adapter or a USB lead you must connect.
Can I split an optical audio signal to two receivers?
Yes, with a Toslink splitter that copies the optical signal to each output. Each output carries the same audio, so both receivers must support the format, and a splitter with several outputs may need its own power.
