Compact Voice Recorder for DIY Projects

The MakerHawk S1 is a new voice recorder module built for hobbyists who want to add sound to greeting cards, gifts or small craft items. It records and plays back up to 16 minutes of audio using 16 MB of internal memory. The board includes a speaker, a rechargeable lithium cell and a simple switch for standalone operation.

16 MB Storage and 16 Minute Runtime

The module holds roughly 16 minutes of recorded material before the memory is full. Audio can also be loaded as MP3 files over the USB Type-C connection, replacing or supplementing live recordings. Five volume levels let you match the output to the project, but there is no headphone jack for private monitoring.

USB Type-C Power and File Transfer

A USB Type-C port handles both charging and data transfer, so the unit can be topped up or updated from any standard cable. The board measures 3.94 by 3.94 by 1.18 inches and weighs 0.04 pounds, making it easy to embed in flat cards or small enclosures. Builders who need longer recording time or removable storage should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

Will the USB Type-C dual interface on the S1 module connect to my older computer that only has USB-A ports?

The module uses a USB Type-C dual interface for charging and MP3 transfer; a USB-C to USB-A cable or adapter is required to connect to legacy USB-A ports.

How can I confirm the S1 module is recording and playing back correctly after I wire it into my project?

Press the independent switch to start recording, speak into the microphone, then press again to stop; use the five-level volume control to listen through the built-in speaker and verify playback quality.

Does the S1 module come with a speaker and battery, or do I need to buy those separately?

The module includes a built-in speaker and a rechargeable 3.7 V lithium battery rated for 16 minutes of recording time; no additional audio or power components are required.
