Dual-band WiFi 6 access point

The Netgear WAX618 is a dual-band WiFi 6 access point built for residential and commercial integration projects. It delivers up to 3 Gbit/s total wireless throughput using a 2x2 antenna configuration. A 2.5 Gbit/s Power-over-Ethernet port provides the wired uplink and power supply. The unit is managed through the NETGEAR Insight platform for cloud-based configuration.

High-density environments and Insight users

This access point suits installers deploying networks in schools, hotels, restaurants or conference centres where many client devices connect simultaneously. It supports WiFi 6 Release 2 with 160 MHz channelisation on the 5 GHz band. Buyers who do not use Insight management or who require multi-gigabit uplinks beyond 2.5 Gbit/s should consider other options.

Sustained throughput with WiFi 6 Release 2

Under continuous load the 160 MHz channels on 5 GHz maintain higher data rates than narrower designs, reducing congestion when many devices are active. The 2.5 Gbit/s PoE uplink prevents the wired link from becoming a bottleneck during peak usage. Enterprise-grade security features remain enforced throughout extended operation.

Questions about this item

Does the WAX618 need a PoE switch or injector that can supply 2.5 Gbit/s power over Ethernet?

The access point has a 2.5 Gbit/s Power-over-Ethernet port, so it requires a PoE source that can deliver both data and power through that single connection.

Will WiFi 5 client devices still connect to the WAX618 at their normal speeds?

Yes, the WAX618 is compatible with previous-generation WiFi devices, so WiFi 5 clients will associate and operate at their usual rates.

How can I confirm the 5 GHz radio is using 160 MHz channels after installation?

Check the Insight management dashboard or the AP's local status page; it will show the active channel width as 160 MHz when the 5 GHz band is configured for WiFi 6 Release 2 operation.
