Sophos XGS 116 desktop firewall

The Sophos XGS 116 is a desktop network security appliance built around an AMD x86 CPU and a Marvell Xstream Flow Processor. It ships with 4 GB of DDR4 memory and a 64 GB M.2 SSD for logs and firmware. The unit includes a three-year Xstream Protection licence and targets small offices or branch sites that need consolidated threat inspection.

Connectivity and physical layout

Eight Gigabit copper ports and one SFP fibre port handle LAN and WAN links, while a front USB 2.0 port and a rear USB 3.0 port allow local storage or console accessories. A COM RJ-45 port and a micro-USB console cable give direct management access. The fanless chassis measures 320 x 213 x 44 mm and weighs 2.2 kg, so it sits on a shelf or rack tray without special mounting.

Upgrade context and fit

This model replaces older entry-level UTM boxes that lacked dedicated flow acceleration and TLS 1.3 decryption capacity. The integrated NPU offloads trusted traffic, raising throughput for SD-WAN and VPN workloads without adding expansion cards. Organisations needing high-port-density fibre aggregation or hardware RAID storage should evaluate larger chassis instead.

Questions about this item

What throughput does the Gigabit Ethernet interface cap at in practice?

The eight copper ports and one SFP port each negotiate up to 1000 Mbps, so any single flow cannot exceed 1 Gbps line rate.

What physical space and mounting does the desktop chassis need?

It measures 320 x 213 x 44 mm and weighs 2.2 kg, sitting on a shelf or desk with no rack ears supplied.

How is the appliance first connected for zero-touch setup, and what step is often missed?

Plug the WAN link into one of the eight RJ-45 ports, apply power from the 12 V 12.5 A adapter, then register the serial number in Sophos Central before the device phones home.
