Model 3-Bay (3.5in SATA/SAS)

  • Hot-swap three drives without trays thanks to trayless SFF-8482 bays
  • Solid aluminum frame protects drives inside two 5.25" bays
  • 70 mm fan moves 27.60 CFM at 26.72 dB-A for quiet cooling
  • Key lock secures each bay against unauthorised removal
  • Supports SATA 1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 Gbps plus SAS 6.0 Gbps

Three 3.5-inch bays in two 5.25-inch slots

The StarTech HSB3SATSASBA fits three 3.5-inch SATA or SAS hard drives into a pair of standard 5.25-inch front bays. Its trayless mechanism lets you insert or remove drives while the system runs, and a key lock secures each bay against accidental ejection. The unit ships with three 18-inch SATA data cables, two SATA power receptacles, three SFF-8482 internal connectors and mounting hardware.

Sustained airflow at 27.60 CFM from a 70 mm

A single 70 mm fan spins at 3000 RPM and moves 27.60 CFM of air across all three drives during continuous operation. Noise is rated at 26.72 dB-A, so the cooling remains audible but subdued under steady load. The aluminum chassis acts as a heatsink, spreading warmth from the drives to the forced-air path without throttling transfer rates on the 6.0 Gbps interface.

Tool-free drive swaps with key-lock security

Drives slide straight into the SFF-8482 receptacles without trays or screws, and the front-panel key lock prevents unintended removal during hot-swap events. The included 18-inch SATA cables reach most motherboard headers, though builders with unusually long routing paths may need extensions. The only common snag is aligning the dual-bay faceplate evenly so the lock engages on both sides.

Questions about this item

How loud is the 70 mm fan at 3000 RPM when the backplane runs continuously?

The sleeve-bearing fan produces 26.72 dB-A while moving 27.60 CFM at zero static pressure.

Which cables and host connections are required to use all three drive slots?

Three SATA 7-pin data cables and two SATA 15-pin power connectors from the host are needed; three 18-inch SATA cables are included.

Can I keep using older 1.5 Gbps SATA drives alongside newer 6.0 Gbps drives in the same unit?

Yes, the backplane supports SATA I, II and III simultaneously, so 1.5 Gbps and 6.0 Gbps drives operate together.
