Bay sizes and tray conversions

Match the drive to the bay. A 2.5-inch SSD needs a bracket or tray to sit in a 3.5-inch bay, and either size can be adapted to a 5.25-inch bay; multi-drive trays hold four 2.5-inch drives in a single 5.25-inch slot. Other adapters turn an mSATA or M.2 SATA drive into a 2.5-inch one. A bracket only holds the drive: it still needs its own SATA data and power connections. Check the tray's maximum drive thickness, since many take 7 mm and 9.5 mm drives but not 15 mm ones.

Mobile racks: interface and drive thickness

A mobile rack lets you swap drives without opening the case, but its interface has to match your system. SATA racks take SATA drives; SAS racks and miniSAS HD (SFF-8643) connections need a suitable controller; U.2 racks hold NVMe drives and need a matching U.2 connection. The rack also needs power, usually from the supply, and sometimes a key for the lock. Check the drive size it accepts, the number of bays, and whether the tray includes screws.

Questions about Drive Brackets and Mounting Kits

Will a 2.5-inch SSD work in a 3.5-inch bay with a bracket?
Yes. The bracket aligns the screw holes with the bay, but the drive still needs its own SATA data and power connectors. Check that the bracket holes match your case rails or screw positions.
What drive thickness fits multi-drive 2.5-inch trays?
Most take 7 mm and 9.5 mm drives, which covers SSDs and slim laptop hard drives. Thicker 15 mm drives often do not fit, so check the thickness limit in the listing.
Can a SATA mobile rack hold an NVMe drive?
No. NVMe drives use PCIe, not SATA. You need a rack with a U.2 or other NVMe connector, a drive that matches it, and a motherboard or controller that supplies the NVMe connection.
