Mini PCI-E to PCI-E 1x to 16x riser

This adapter converts a mini PCI Express slot into a full-size 16x slot using a USB 3.0 data cable. It includes a SATA to 6-pin power cable to supply the riser board. The card targets builders adding expansion cards to systems that only expose a mini PCI-E interface.

Practical limits of the USB 3.0 link

The USB 3.0 cable carries the PCIe signalling, so bandwidth is limited to the USB 3.0 throughput rather than native PCIe speeds. Latency and signal integrity depend on cable quality and length, which may restrict compatibility with high-performance GPUs or storage controllers. SATA and eSATA interfaces are not used for the data path.

Questions about this item

What is the difference between the 1x and 16x versions of this riser card?

The card uses a 1x mini PCI-E connector and extends it to a 16x slot, so there is only one version.

What does the USB 3.0 label mean for actual data transfer speed?

The USB 3.0 cable carries the PCI-E 1x signal; throughput is limited to the single-lane bandwidth.
