Vszerda SFF-8654 to SFF-8639 Adapter

This Vszerda adapter connects a SlimSAS x4 host port (SFF-8654 38-pin) to a U.3 NVMe drive bay (SFF-8639 68-pin). It includes a SATA power lead and measures 75cm in length. The copper conductors carry PCIe 4.0 signalling at up to 16Gbps per lane. It is built for high-density server or workstation deployments.

Upgrading from PCIe 3.0 U.2 or U.3 backplanes

The SFF-8654 end delivers 64Gbps aggregate bandwidth across four lanes using PCIe 4.0. The SFF-8639 receptacle is limited to PCIe 3.0 speeds of 8Gbps per lane, totalling 32Gbps. The jump is worth it when the host controller and SSD both support PCIe 4.0, allowing the drive to run at its rated throughput rather than being capped by the older interface.

Check host port, drive type

Verify that the host side presents a male SFF-8654 connector wired for PCIe 4.0 x4. The drive must be a U.3 NVMe SSD; the adapter explicitly does not support U.2 NVMe SSDs. Ensure the SATA power connector can reach your power supply and that the 75cm cable length fits your chassis routing. Compatibility with mixed SAS or SATA devices on the SFF-8639 side is supported by the connector specification.

Questions about this item

What clearance does the SFF-8654 38Pin connector need to plug into a SlimSAS x4 port?

The compact SFF-8654 38Pin male connector fits standard SlimSAS x4 receptacles; allow a few millimetres behind the port for the cable bend radius.

Which end connects first when installing the SFF-8654 to SFF-8639 cable with SATA power?

Attach the SFF-8654 38Pin side to the host SlimSAS x4 port, then plug the SFF-8639 68Pin female end into the U.3 NVMe SSD, finally connect the SATA power lead to the PSU.

When should the SATA power lead on this 75cm adapter be inspected or replaced?

Check the SATA power connector whenever you reseat the U.3 NVMe drive; replace the cable if the power pins show discolouration or the latch no longer clicks securely.
