Purpose-built surveillance storage

The WD Purple WD10PURX is a 1TB 3.5-inch internal hard drive engineered for video surveillance systems. It uses a SATA 6.0Gb/s interface, spins at 5400 RPM and provides 64MB of cache. The drive is designed for write-intensive, low bit-rate, high stream-count workloads typical of security recording.

Suits continuous recording.

This drive suits installers and system integrators who need a drive rated for up to 180TB per year workload in multi-bay surveillance enclosures. It supports more than eight bays and includes TLER and ATA streaming support. Buyers wanting a general-purpose desktop drive or a drive for low-duty, intermittent access should look at something else.

180TB/year workload rating

The single specification that decides fit is the 180TB per year workload rate. Surveillance systems that write multiple streams around the clock need this endurance rating; workloads well below that level do not require a surveillance-class drive.

Questions about this item

How does the 180TB/year workload rating affect real-world use in a recorder?

The 180TB/year rating means the drive is built to handle continuous write streams from multiple cameras without the wear that would shorten a desktop drive's life.

What does the SATA 6.0Gb/s interface limit in a surveillance system?

The SATA 6.0Gb/s link caps the maximum burst transfer rate, but sustained throughput stays well within the 5400 RPM drive's capabilities for typical camera bit-rates.

Will the 26.10mm height fit my 3.5-inch drive bay?

Yes, the 26.10mm height matches the standard 3.5-inch form factor, so it mounts in any desktop or NVR bay designed for full-height drives.
