Purpose-built surveillance storage

The WD Purple WD30PURX is a 3TB 3.5-inch internal hard drive engineered for continuous video recording. It targets installers and system integrators who need reliable 24/7 operation in network video recorders or DVRs. The drive supports up to 32 high-definition cameras and uses AllFrame technology to reduce frame loss during heavy write workloads.

Upgrade from desktop drives

Standard desktop drives are not rated for the sustained write streams that surveillance systems generate. This model replaces them when the workload exceeds 180TB per year or when the array contains more than eight bays. The jump is worth it when prioritised write operations and TLER support are required to prevent video gaps or RAID drop-outs.

Integration in a recorder

The drive connects via a SATA 6.0Gb/s interface and fits standard 3.5-inch bays with maximum dimensions of 147.00mm length, 101.60mm width and 26.10mm height. It draws power from the system SATA power connector and requires no additional cooling beyond normal chassis airflow. The 64MB cache buffers incoming streams to free the host controller for other tasks.

Questions about this item

Will the 3.5 inch form factor and 26.10mm height fit my standard surveillance enclosure?

Yes, the drive measures 147.00mm long, 101.60mm wide and 26.10mm high, matching the standard 3.5 inch internal bay used by most DVR and NVR chassis.

Do I need any special cables or jumpers to install the SATA 6.0Gb/s interface?

Connect a standard SATA data cable and a SATA power connector; no jumpers are required, but ensure the controller is set to AHCI mode so the drive reports its full 3TB capacity.

How often should I expect to replace a drive rated for 180TB per year in a 32-camera system?

At the maximum 180TB annual workload the drive is designed for continuous operation; plan replacement around the three-year mark or when SMART attributes indicate wear.
