Surveillance-class 5TB storage

The WD Purple WD50PURX is a 5TB 3.5" internal hard drive built for 24/7 surveillance recording. It connects via SATA 6.0Gb/s, spins at 5400 RPM and includes 64MB cache. AllFrame technology works with ATA streaming to reduce frame loss and pixel errors in high-definition security systems.

Suits multi-camera NVR builds.

This drive supports up to 32 cameras and up to eight drives in a single system, with a workload rating of 180TB per year. Write-intensive, low-bitrate streaming is prioritised over random-access performance. Buyers needing low-latency OS boots or frequent small-file access should choose a different drive class.

180TB/year workload rating

The 180TB annual workload rating is the single figure that tells you whether this drive matches your recording volume. If your planned camera count, resolution and retention period stay within that budget, the WD50PURX is the right part; if the expected writes exceed it, a higher-rated surveillance drive is required.

Questions about this item

How long is the 5TB Purple drive rated to last under a 180TB yearly workload?

The drive carries a 3-year limited warranty and is engineered for an 180TB per year workload rate, so it is designed to handle that sustained write load throughout the warranty period.

What sustained write limit appears first when recording from 32 cameras 24/7?

The 180TB per year workload rating is the primary limit; at 5400 RPM with 64MB cache the drive prioritises write operations to keep up with high stream-count surveillance recording.

How much heat and noise does the 5400 RPM 5TB drive produce in an always-on NVR?

The Purple series is built for lower power consumption in 24/7 operation; at 5400 RPM it runs cooler and quieter than desktop drives while supporting up to eight drives in a single enclosure.
