Mac-ready portable storage

The Western Digital My Passport for Mac delivers 4TB of portable capacity in a Midnight Blue enclosure. It connects via USB 3.2 Gen 1 and is formatted out of the box for macOS 11 and later, making it ready for immediate Time Machine backups. The drive includes both a SuperSpeed USB-A cable and a USB-A to USB-C adapter for broad Mac compatibility.

Bundled software and security features

WD Discovery installs WD Security for password protection and 256-bit hardware encryption, WD Drive Utilities for drive management, and tools to import content from social media and cloud services. A downloadable HFS+ driver enables read and write access on Windows 10 and newer without reformatting the drive. The quick install guide walks through the initial setup steps.

Check your Mac before ordering

Verify that your Mac runs macOS 11 or later to match the stated system requirement. Confirm you have an available USB-A or USB-C port for the supplied cable and adapter. The drive draws power from the USB bus, so ensure the port can supply sufficient current for reliable operation. Compatibility may vary with specific hardware configurations.

Questions about this item

Does the 4 TB mechanical drive need any periodic maintenance such as lubrication or bearing replacement?

No user-serviceable parts are inside; the sealed mechanism runs without scheduled lubrication or bearing changes.

What limits continuous write speed when the drive is used all day over USB 3.2 Gen 1?

The 5 Gbps SuperSpeed USB-A interface caps sustained throughput before the internal platters reach their own ceiling.

How warm and loud does the Midnight Blue enclosure get during an all-day backup?

The compact 0.75" x 2.95" x 4.22" aluminium shell stays warm to the touch and the spindle is audible in a quiet room.
