Designed for Mac and Time Machine

The WD My Passport for Mac delivers 5TB of portable storage in a midnight blue enclosure. It connects via USB 3.2 Gen 1 and includes a USB-A cable with a USB-A to USB-C adapter for broad host compatibility. The drive comes pre-formatted for macOS 11 and later, making it ready for Time Machine backups immediately.

USB 3.2 Gen 1 practical limits

The SuperSpeed USB-A cable supports a 5Gbps interface, though real-world throughput will be lower due to mechanical drive speeds and protocol overhead. The drive remains backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports at reduced performance. A downloadable HFS+ driver enables read and write access on Windows 10 and later without reformatting the volume.

Check your setup before ordering

Verify that your Mac runs macOS 11 or newer to use the drive natively with Time Machine. Windows users must install the provided HFS+ driver to access the volume without reformatting. Ensure an available USB-A or USB-C port exists on your device, and confirm that 5TB capacity meets your backup requirements.

Questions about this item

Which capacity of the My Passport for Mac should I pick?

The model listed is the 5TB version; the series is offered up to 6TB so choose 5TB if that capacity fits your backup plan.

What does the USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface deliver in everyday use?

It provides a 5Gbps SuperSpeed connection through the included USB-A cable and USB-A-to-USB-C adapter, and remains compatible with USB 2.0 ports.

How does the USB 3.2 Gen 1 link limit real-world transfer speed?

The 5Gbps electrical ceiling caps sustained throughput well below the theoretical maximum, so large file copies will peak at the bus limit rather than the drive’s own speed.
