What this drive is

The Western Digital My Passport Ultra is a 4TB portable hard drive with a blue metal cover and USB-C connectivity. It ships formatted for Windows 10 and includes a USB 3.1 adapter for older ports. The drive uses 256-bit AES hardware encryption for password protection.

How it fits your setup

The unit connects through USB-C or USB 3.0 and draws power from the host port, so no external supply is needed. WD Discovery software handles scheduled backups and drive utilities after internet activation. A downloadable NTFS driver enables read-write access on macOS, though Time Machine requires reformatting.

Who should consider it

This drive suits users who want a single, bus-powered 4TB volume with hardware encryption and automated backup software for Windows. Buyers needing faster solid-state speeds, ruggedised drop ratings, or native macOS formatting without reformatting should look at other options.

Questions about this item

Will the 4 TB drive keep up with USB 3.0 speeds during long transfers?

The drive uses a USB 3.0 interface with a USB-C connector and includes a USB 3.1 adapter, so sustained throughput follows the USB 3.0 specification.

How much heat or noise does the metal-cased 4 TB drive produce when running continuously?

The anodised metal enclosure acts as a passive heatsink; with no fan the drive runs silently and stays warm rather than hot during all-day use.

What operating system must my PC already have to use the drive out of the box?

It comes formatted for Windows 10, 8.1 or 7, so one of those versions is required for immediate plug-and-play operation.
