What it is and who it's for

The Western Digital My Passport Ultra is a 5TB portable external hard drive in blue, designed for Windows 10, 8.1 or 7 users who need high-capacity storage on the move. It connects via USB-C with a supplied USB 3.1 adapter for older USB-A ports. Mac users must reformat the drive to use Time Machine and install a downloadable NTFS driver for read-write access.

Build quality and daily connectivity

A refined metal cover gives the drive a sleek, durable feel suited to frequent travel. The package includes a USB-C cable and a USB 3.1 adapter, ensuring compatibility with both modern USB-C ports and legacy USB-A ports without extra purchases. The compact form factor slips easily into a bag, while the metal construction helps protect the drive from everyday knocks.

The spec that decides fit

The single figure that determines suitability is the 5TB capacity, which dictates how many photos, videos, music files and documents you can carry. Hardware-based 256-bit AES encryption with password protection secures data if the drive is lost. WD Discovery software enables automatic backup schedules and cloud import, though internet activation is required. Reformatting is necessary for full macOS Time Machine support.

Questions about this item

What practical speed limit does the USB 3.0 interface impose on this 5TB My Passport Ultra?

The drive uses a USB 3.0 interface, so real-world throughput is capped at the 5 Gbit/s signalling rate of that standard.

What physical clearance does the 0.83" x 3.21" x 4.33" chassis need to fit in a bag or dock?

At 0.83 inches thick, 3.21 inches wide and 4.33 inches long, it slides into most laptop sleeves and vertical docks without forcing.

How is the drive set up on Windows 10, and which step do people skip?

Connect the USB-C cable, run the WD Discovery installer for WD Backup and Drive Utilities, then enable 256-bit AES hardware encryption — many forget the encryption activation.
