What it is

The Western Digital My Passport Ultra for Mac is a 4TB portable hard drive pre-formatted in HFS+ Journaled for macOS Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra or El Capitan. It connects via USB-C and includes a USB 3.1 adapter for older ports. The drive comes with WD Discovery software and WD Drive Utilities for backup and social media import. A silver metal enclosure houses the mechanism.

Capacity and headroom

Four terabytes holds large photo libraries, video projects and document archives with room to grow. The USB 3.1 Gen 1 interface delivers solid transfer rates for everyday backups and file moves. Very large single-file transfers or sustained heavy workloads will hit the mechanical throughput ceiling. The included USB 3.1 adapter ensures the drive works with legacy USB-A ports on older Macs.

Deciding specification

The drive is formatted HFS+ Journaled for macOS out of the box and includes a downloadable HFS driver for Windows read-write access. Password protection with 256-bit AES hardware encryption is enabled through WD Security. Buyers who need native NTFS formatting or exFAT for cross-platform use without extra drivers should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

Will the USB 3.1 Gen 1 interface work with my older Mac that only has USB-A ports?

The drive ships with a USB-C cable and a USB 3.1 adapter, so it connects to legacy USB-A ports without extra accessories.

How can I verify the 256-bit AES hardware encryption is active after I set a password?

Open WD Security in WD Discovery; the dashboard shows encryption status and confirms the drive is locked when ejected.

Does the box include both the USB-C cable and the USB 3.1 adapter, or must I buy the adapter separately?

Both the USB-C cable and the USB 3.1 adapter are in the package along with the drive, software and quick install guide.
