Wash, dry, polish: one tool for each stage

A wash mitt or soft-bristle brush lifts dirt in soapy water; separate microfiber towels dry the panels; polishing cloths and foam pads handle wax. Thickness, from thin glass cloths to plush towels about half an inch deep, changes feel and water capacity. Edgeless cloths avoid stiff stitched borders that can scratch. What is the two-bucket wash method?

One bucket holds soapy water and the other clean rinse water. After each panel, rinse the mitt in the rinse bucket before dipping it back in the soap, so grit stays out of the soap and off the paint. A grit guard at the bottom of the rinse bucket helps.

Is paste wax or liquid wax easier to use?

Liquids and sprays go on and come off faster; pastes often take more effort but can last longer on the paint. Either works on clean paint. Apply thin layers, keep wax off unpainted plastic trim, and buff with a clean microfiber cloth.

Can I wash my car in direct sunlight?

It is best to avoid it. Sun and hot panels dry soap and water quickly, leaving spots and streaks, and some products bake onto the surface. Wash in shade or in the cool of morning or evening, and rinse and dry panel by panel.
