Bowl shape, seat bolts and the rough-in measurement

For a toilet seat, bowl shape comes first. Round bowls are shorter and elongated bowls are longer, by about two inches, and a seat for the wrong shape overhangs or leaves gaps. Commercial seats are often open-front, with a split at the front, and may be heavy-duty plastic or molded wood. Measure the distance between the two bolt holes and the bowl length from the bolt centers to the front edge.

For a complete toilet, check the flush volume, such as 1.6 gallons per flush, and the mounting. Floor-mounted bowls rely on the rough-in, the distance from the wall to the center of the waste outlet, with 12 inches the common figure; a wrong rough-in will not line up. Special designs exist, for example ligature-resistant toilets with no points to tie anything to, used in some care facilities. Read the description to see whether the seat or flush valve is included.

Dispensers, spindles and wipers: consumables that fit one model

Restroom supply parts are brand- and model-specific. A touchless towel dispenser works with towels sized for it, and drop-down roll spindles must match the dispenser model and the roll core. Check whether the dispenser runs on batteries or mains power, and which towel or tissue types it accepts. Wipers sold in a bucket are sized by sheet and count; confirm they suit the cleaner or disinfectant you plan to use.

For plungers, use a flanged plunger on a toilet, because the extra flap seals in the bowl outlet, and a plain cup plunger on flat drains such as sinks and tubs. Bidet sprayers connect to the toilet supply line with a T-adapter, so check that its connectors match your supply line and fill valve, and that the hose is long enough to reach.

Questions about Commercial Toilets, Seats and Restroom Supplies

Round or elongated toilet seat?
Look at the bowl rim. A round bowl is nearly circular, while an elongated bowl is oval and about two inches longer from the bolt holes to the front. Measure that distance from the bolt centers to the front edge and match it to the seat's listed length.
What does 1.6 gpf mean on a toilet?
It is the water used per flush, in gallons: 1.6 gallons per flush has been the usual US maximum for years, and many newer toilets use less. A lower figure saves water, but check that the bowl and drain line clear waste reliably.
What does ligature-resistant mean on a toilet?
It means the fixture is designed without projections or gaps where a cord or strap could be tied off, often with a sloped, smooth form and concealed fixings. They are specified for care and secure settings and are not needed in ordinary homes.
