Key, combination, keypad or fingerprint: how the safe opens

Keyed locks are simple and need no batteries but depend on keeping the key safe. Combination dials are battery-free as well, though slower to use. Keypad and biometric models open fast, with biometric ones storing a set number of fingerprints, but they run on batteries and should provide a backup key or external power contacts. Key cabinets and key boxes are a different product: they hold hooked keys by count, not documents.

Drop-box safes have a slot so cash or envelopes can be deposited without opening the door, and wall safes fit between studs behind a picture or panel. Wall models are limited by stud spacing, commonly 16 inches, so check the width before choosing. A floor or cabinet safe has more room but is only as secure as its anchoring, so look for pre-drilled holes and fixing bolts.

Inside size, fire rating and anchoring

Inside capacity, quoted in cubic feet or liters, matters more than outside size, because walls and insulation take room. Compact safes of around half a cubic foot suit documents and small valuables. Fire protection is a separate rating, shown as a time at a stated temperature, and a lightweight box with a lock is not automatically fire resistant. Paper and digital media need different protection, since discs and drives fail at lower temperatures than paper.

Questions about Home and Office Safes and Key Boxes

Is a fire-resistant safe also burglar-resistant?
Not necessarily. Fire and burglary ratings are tested separately. A fire-rated box may have thin steel that a tool can open quickly, while a heavy burglary-rated safe may have little fire protection. Decide the main risk, and look for an explicit rating for it.
Are fingerprint safes reliable?
They open quickly and can hold many users, but performance depends on sensor quality, clean dry fingers and fresh batteries. Choose a model with a backup key or external power contacts, and enroll each fingerprint more than once, on more than one finger.
Why should a safe be bolted down?
A small or medium safe can simply be carried away and opened elsewhere. Bolting it to a floor or wall stud through its pre-drilled holes makes that far harder. Check the listing for anchor holes and whether fixing hardware is included.
