Three matches every power cord must make

A power cord is a pair of ends. The wall end must match your outlet, such as NEMA 5-15P in North America, or a Schuko, UK or Australian plug elsewhere. The device end is usually a C13 socket for desktop PCs and monitors, while high-power workstations, servers and some UPS units use the larger C19. Then check the voltage rating: a cord must be rated for the supply voltage in use, 125 V for North American outlets and 250 V where 230 V is standard.

Wire gauge, length and plug angle

Wire gauge sets how much current a cord can carry. Lower AWG numbers are thicker, so a 14 AWG cord handles more than 18 AWG and suits a high-wattage gaming PC or workstation, while 18 AWG is plenty for a monitor. Pick length for the layout: short cords reduce clutter behind a desk, long ones reach distant outlets, and a right-angle C13 end lets a PC sit close to the wall. Colored cords help identify circuits in a rack. Replace any cord with exposed wire or a loose plug.

Questions about PC Power Cables: C13, C19 and Regional Plugs

Can I use any C13 power cord with my PC?
Any cord with the right wall plug and a C13 socket will connect, but it must also be rated for your voltage and for the PC's load. A cord marked 15 A at 125 V is a good choice for a high-power desktop, while thin cords suit monitors and small devices.
What is the difference between C13 and C19?
Both are three-contact sockets, but C19 is larger and carries more current: 16 A against 10 A for C13 under IEC ratings, or 20 A against 15 A in North America. A C13 cord will not fit the C20 inlet that takes a C19, so check the device's inlet and choose a cord rated for the equipment.
Do I need a different power cord when I move abroad?
You need a cord with the local wall plug, rated for the local voltage. Most PC power supplies accept 100 to 240 V, so only the cord changes, but check the label on your supply first and look for a voltage switch on older units.
