Size, pin count and panel code: the things that must match

A replacement screen has to match the original in four ways. The size in inches is the first, but the connector counts too: panels use 30-pin or 40-pin cable connectors, and the pins must match your laptop's cable. The panel code printed on the back of the old screen, such as N156KME or B133HAN, is the surest identifier. Mounting also matters, because some panels come with brackets and others do not. Touch and non-touch versions are usually not interchangeable.

Resolution, refresh rate and full assemblies: upgrades and limits

Resolution ranges from HD and Full HD to QHD, WUXGA and 4K. Keep the original resolution unless a listing confirms your model, because a laptop's graphics and cable may not support a higher one, and the same goes for higher refresh rates. IPS panels hold color and brightness at an angle. A full top assembly includes the lid and bezel and sometimes the webcam, so it suits models where the bare panel is hard to swap; a bare panel needs your old bezel and brackets moved across.

Questions about Laptop Screens and Display Panels

Can I fit a higher-resolution screen than the original?
Only if it uses the same connector and your laptop's graphics and cable can drive it. A cable made for a lower-resolution panel may not carry QHD or 4K, so match the original unless a listing names your model.
How do I know which screen my laptop uses?
Remove the bezel and read the panel code on the back of the existing screen, then match it, along with the pin count, connector position and size. The model number alone may cover several panel options.
What does a full assembly add over a bare panel?
An assembly includes the lid shell and bezel, and sometimes the webcam, so it is easier to fit and often needed on thin models. A bare panel is only the display and needs the old frame and brackets moved across.
