Item trackers: which phone network they work with

A tracker is only as good as the network that finds it. Trackers built for the Find My network work with iPhones, while Galaxy trackers rely on Samsung phones and their finding network, and cross-platform use is limited. Some add ultra-wideband for arrow-style precision finding, which needs a phone with UWB. Check the battery type, replaceable coin cell or built-in, the alarm volume, and whether a ring or attachment hole suits your keys or bag. Bluetooth range is limited to some tens of meters.

Safety matters for any tracker: both major phone systems warn you if an unknown tag is traveling with you, and a tag is not meant for tracking people. Choose a tag that is easy to find on your phone, keep spare batteries if it uses a coin cell, and test the alarm once so you know how loud it is before you rely on it.

Smart plugs, scales and speakers: Wi-Fi band, app and power rating

Smart plugs and other Wi-Fi devices often join only 2.4 GHz networks, which some titles state, so check that your router offers that band. The plug's amp rating, such as 15 A, limits what it can switch; heaters, air conditioners and motors can exceed it. Smart scales connect over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to an app that keeps your history. Alarm-clock speakers combine Bluetooth audio with a display, so check the power source and whether a battery keeps the time during an outage.

Questions about Bluetooth Trackers and Smart Devices

Will a tracker work with my phone?
Only if it uses a network your phone supports. Find My trackers need an iPhone, and Galaxy trackers need a Samsung phone. Some work with any phone through their own app, but then rely on that app's smaller finding network.
Why won't my smart plug connect to Wi-Fi?
Most smart plugs join only 2.4 GHz networks. If your router combines 2.4 and 5 GHz under one name, set up the plug from a phone connected to 2.4 GHz, or temporarily turn off the 5 GHz band.
Can a smart plug run any appliance?
Only within its rating. A 15 A plug can switch many lamps and fans, but high-draw heaters, air conditioners and motors can exceed it or need a dedicated circuit. Check the amps and the volts.
