Steel or nylon strings?

Steel strings are brighter and louder, and they pull harder on the neck, so the guitar must be built for them. Nylon strings are softer under the fingers, with a warmer, rounder tone, and sit on a wider, flatter neck. Never fit steel strings to a nylon-string classical guitar. A ukulele is a different instrument again, with four nylon strings tuned differently, so a guitar string set will not fit it. Match the set to the instrument before anything else.

Gauges, tuners and capos that actually fit

Strings are sold by gauge, the thickness in thousandths of an inch: light sets are easier on the fingertips, medium sets give more volume but need more pressure. Clip-on tuners read vibration from the headstock, so they work in a noisy room. A capo should suit the neck, since flat classical fingerboards need a different shape from curved steel-string ones. Where pickups are listed, check how they fit the soundhole or body before assuming they suit your guitar.

Questions about Acoustic Guitars and Strings

How often should I change acoustic guitar strings?
When they sound dull, feel rough or stop holding their tuning. Players who practice most days often change them every month or two; occasional players can go longer. Coated strings tend to last longer, and sweaty hands wear any set faster.
Can I put nylon strings on a steel-string guitar?
You can try, but the result is poor. Steel-string saddles and nuts are shaped for thin, hard strings, so nylon strings often buzz, sound dull and may not stay in tune. Use the string type the guitar was built for.
Do ukulele and guitar strings fit each other's instruments?
No. A standard ukulele has four short nylon strings and a different tuning from a guitar, so a guitar set is the wrong length and gauge. Buy sets labeled for your exact instrument: ukulele size, classical guitar or steel-string.
