Badge printers and snapshot printers are different tools

ID card printers print onto blank PVC cards of CR-80 size, the standard wallet-card format, and some take CR-79 adhesive-back cards. They use ribbons, and the printing method tells you how: dye-sublimation for color and thermal transfer for crisp black text and barcodes. Many compact instant photo printers use ZINK paper, where the color is built into the paper itself, so there is no ink or ribbon, only paper; others use dye-sublimation cartridges. Decide whether you are making badges or snapshots before you compare anything else.

Ribbon panels, print sides and throughput

For badges, the ribbon decides the print. A YMCKO ribbon has yellow, magenta, cyan and black panels plus a clear overlay for full-color photos, while a mono resin ribbon suits text and barcodes. Dual-sided models print both faces in one pass, which helps when the back carries a barcode or rules. Speed runs from around 16 seconds per card, about 225 an hour, to 400 or more an hour on high-volume models. Ask whether magnetic stripe or smart-chip encoders can be fitted.

Questions about ID Card Printers and Instant Photo Printers

What size are ID cards?
Standard ID cards are CR-80, 3.375 by 2.125 inches, the same size as the cards in your wallet. CR-79 is a slightly smaller size used for adhesive-back cards. Always check which card sizes and thickness a printer accepts before buying blanks.
Do instant photo printers need ink?
Not the ZINK type. ZINK printers use paper with the color crystals built in, so the paper is the only consumable. Other compact models use dye-sublimation cartridges that pair a ribbon with paper. Prints are small, often 2 by 3 inches, and the paper must be the kind your printer takes.
How do I protect printed ID cards from wear?
A full-color ribbon usually includes a clear overlay panel that coats the card and resists scuffs. For longer life, some models add lamination, or you can use cards with a protective finish. Mono resin prints are naturally durable.
